Cultura Books, a London-based independent publisher, wanted to refresh their digital identity to better connect with a new generation of readers. Known for championing diverse voices and experimental literature, they needed a website that could reflect their cultural relevance while providing a smooth e-commerce experience. Sonder was tasked with creating a platform that would inspire curiosity, celebrate their authors, and make book discovery effortless.
Challenges
The key challenge was balancing editorial richness with usability. Cultura wanted to showcase its books almost like an art gallery, while ensuring the purchase process remained quick and frictionless. The design also needed to highlight the individuality of each author without overshadowing the publisher’s overarching brand. Finally, the website had to be flexible enough to accommodate future growth and new publishing categories.
Solutions
We designed a website that merged editorial sensibilities with digital retail. Each book page was treated as a curated story, featuring immersive photography, bold typography, and layered narratives about the authors. The navigation system was streamlined, making book discovery intuitive through smart categorization and recommendation engines. Branding emphasized cultural vibrancy, with dynamic layouts and bold colors that reflected the publisher’s commitment to fresh voices.
Outcomes
Cultura Books’ new website quickly became a hub for readers seeking unique literary experiences. Sales improved due to the seamless purchase journey, while engagement with author profiles grew significantly. The project was recognized with an Awwwards nomination, highlighting its success as a fusion of editorial storytelling and functional design.
